영혼과 영원과의 대화
(Dialogues between the Soul and Eternity)

1.꽃은 꽃이 아니다. 한 가지일 수 없기 때문이다. 그것은 김소월의 시가 되는가 하면 부처님의 마음이 되고 부처님의 세계가 되기도 하다. “…약산 진달래꽃 아름따라 가실 길에 뿌리오리다. 가시는 걸음걸음 놓인 그 꽃을 사뿐히 즈려 밞고 가시옵서소.” 이렇듯 소월은 놓아야하는 인연의 설움과 아픔을 꽃뿌려 달래고 있다. 하지만 그것은 한갓 사바(婆娑)의 고뇌에 지나지 않는다. 그보다도 부처님의 연꽃 한송이는 마하가섭(摩訶迦葉)의 법안을 뜨게 하지 않았던가! 그가 수줍은 듯 내보인 염화미소의 화답이 그것이었다. 가섭은 꽃으로 영혼의 대화를 하였던 것이다.
2.꽃은 꽃이 아니다. 보 들레르에게 꽃은 악의 상징이기 때문이다. 그에게 꽃은 우울, 고통, 반항, 멸시를 뿜어내는 악마(Démon)의 분노에 지나지 않는다. 그의 마음 속에서는 어리석음(la sottise), 과오(l'erreur), 죄악(le péché), 탐욕(la lésine) 같은 악마의 꽃이 주체할 수 없이 피어오르기 때문이다. 그뿐만이 아니다. 고갱도 낯선 꽃으로 「저승사자」(1892)에 대한 두려움을 강조하는가 하면 유령과 같은 꽃으로 「의자 위의 해바라기」(1901)들을 위협하며 더욱 기죽이고 있다.
3.이렇듯 꽃은 꽃이 아니다. 화가들은 저마다 꽃으로 철학하기 때문이다. 고흐는 해바라기에다 줄곧 실존적 의미를 부여하는가 하면 클림트도 고개를 떨군 채 묵상하는 「해바라기」(1906) 속에다 자신을 투영한다. 그런가 하면 모네에게 수련꽃들은 현전하는 현존재다. 하지만 그들에게 해바라기나 수련은 더 이상 꽃이 아니다. 꽃은 노에마(noema; 의미내용 자체) 이상의 그 무엇이기 때문이다. 그래서 그들에게 꽃은 영혼의 입구나 다름없다. 그것들은 구원(久遠)으로 향하려는 영혼의 통로이기도 하다. 고흐와 클림트에게 그렇듯 (꽃과 영혼의 대화를 나누고 있는) 작가 심명숙에게도 마찬가지다.
4.작가들에게 꽃의 존재이유는 그림의 그것과도 같다. 보는 이가 없다면, 그 유혹에 입맞추는 이가 없다면 그것들은 외롭다. 그리고 슬프다. 그래서 화가들은 꽃을 무엇보다 안타까워하고 사랑하기도 한다. 나르키소스(Narcissus)가 뛰어든 자리에서 꽃으로 환생하듯 화가는 이미 꽃의 화신(化身)인지도 모른다. 그것이 그들의 인연이고 운명인가보다. 그래서 심명숙도 꽃과 만나고 꽃과 대화하려 한다. 하지만 그녀가 가득 펼쳐놓은 꽃들과의 대화는 고흐의 그것과도 다르고 고갱의 것과도 다르다. 그것들은 모네의 수련도 아니고 클림트의 해바라기도 아니다. 보들레르의 꽃은 더욱 아니다. 오히려 그녀는 캔버스를 빌어 부처님에게 산화공덕(散華功德; 부처님 앞에 꽃을 뿌려 공양하는 의식)하고 있다. 그녀의 영혼이 영원을 꿈꾸면서 말이다. 그래서 그녀의 꽃잔치는 영혼을 영원으로 전하는 염화일시(拈花一示; 영혼을 마음에서 마음으로 전하는 일)나 다름없다.

1.Flower is not a flower. Because it is not a singular one. It could be a poem of Kim, So-Weol(1902-1934), the heart of Buddha, and the world of Buddha. “… I would sprinkle azaleas from Mt. Yak on your path. For each step, please tread softly on the flowers when you leave.” As such, So-Weol soothes his sorrow and pain, which is generated by letting go of his beloved one by scattering flowers. However, it just ceases to be a mere suffering of the mundane world. Besides, was it not Buddha’s single lotus flower that opened up the sacred eyes of Mahakasyapa(one of the Buddha's ten disciples)? It was his shyly unveiled response. With a flower it was Kasyapa who was engaged in the conversation of soul.
2.Flower is not a flower. Because it is the symbol of evil to Baudelaire. For him, flower is nothing but the melancholy, pain, defiance, and disdain of Démon who exudes contempt. Because there are insuppressible flowers of Démon such as stupidity (la sottise), fault (l'erreur), sin (le péché), and greed (la lésine) blooming all around. That is not all. P. Gauguin also accentuated the fearsomeness of the Grim Reaper(1982) with strange flowers while threatening and discouraging Sunflowers on a Chair(1901) by ghastly flowers.
3.As such, flower is not a flower. Because each painter philosophizes with flowers. For instance Van Gogh assiduously assigned existential meanings to the sunflowers, while G. Klimt reflected his self to meditating, bowing Sunflowers(1906). On the other hand, waterlilies are current being. For them, however, sunflowers or waterlilies are no longer flowers. It is because flowers are something that is more than noema(contents of meaning as such). Therefore, flowers to the mere equivalent to the entrance of soul. They are also apathway to soul oriented towards the Eternity. Just like Gogh and Klimt, it is the same to the painter Shim, Myung-Sook(who is engaged in conversation between her soul and flowers).
4.For painters, the reason for being of flowers is the same as that of their paintings. Without someone to watch them, someone to kiss their temptations, they would be lonesome. And they feel sad. Thus, painters are all hot and bothered about those flowers and love them more than any other things. Just as Narcissus was reborn as a flower on the very spot he fell, painters would be already the incarnation of flowers. Perhaps that would be their karma and destiny.
Therefore Shim, Myung-Sook always encounters flowers on her canvas and attempts to dialogue with them. However, her conversations with flowers are different from those of Gogh and of Gauguin. Her flowers are neither Monet’s waterlilies nor Klimt’s sunflowers. Furthermore, they are not at all flowers of Baudelaire. Rather she borrows canvas to carry out a rite, Sanhwagongdeok (散華功德; dedicating flowers to Buddha). In this case her soul is dreaming of eternity. Therefore her festival of flowers on canvas is not different from Yeomhwayilsi (拈花一示; delivering soul from heart to heart) that transcends her soul to the eternity.
